artist statement
My work reflects my continuing interests in nature, interpersonal relationships, and re-contextualizing gothic architecture motifs. Through intricately crafted pottery and hand-built ceramic sculpture, my art gives form to intense emotions stemming from religious trauma, grief, and personal battles with mental health. The tactile and archival nature of clay imbues my work with a sense of inherent memory, much like a man-made fossil—a theme I frequently explore. I find that ceramic objects hold a sense of sentimentality, keeping the maker's touch through all the rigorous steps of the firing process. My work, inspired by my lived experience with survivor's guilt, PTSD, and depression, seeks to expose the challenging realities of mental health and promote discussions about complex emotions.
My clay practice uses diverse hand-building methods, especially coil building and experimental markings, which helps me understand and respect the material. Recently, my work examines the interplay between relationships and decorative/crafted objects in daily routines. My ceramic goblets and regal forms, featuring imagined fossil patterns, are memorials to the hands that made them. Meant to be used in the household as less-than-precious objects, these goblets become activated by regular use within the home.
