A Cabinet Collection of Fossilized Goblets
Date
2023
Goblets, being a regal form typically associated with religious ceremonies, can transform the experience of a mundane ritual, such as drinking coffee or having a morning cup of tea. Considering the prestigious context of this drinkware, this body of work compares the relationship between objects, artifacts, and fossils. I want to highlight the archival qualities of ceramics and how each handmade piece can be considered a fossil. The goblet is not my hands nor my touch, rather it is a physical monument of the clay's memory of my influence. In the way fossilized remains of extinct creatures inform us of life before humans inhabited the earth, unearthed pottery can give us a window into the lives and everyday “rituals” of previous civilizations. Do these thoughts inform the sentimental nature of a cabinet collection?
